St. Kitts Scenic Railway Step aboard the 'Last Railway in the West Indies' for an unsurpassed opportunity to experience the scenery and culture of this unspoiled country. The 'Island Series' railcars of the St. Kitts Scenic Railway are unlike any other railcars anywhere in the world. They are double-decked, with an upper open-air observation platform that puts you high above the top of the sugar cane and island vegetation for unobstructed 360° degree viewing. The lower air-conditioned 'parlour features huge six-foot vaulted windows, colourful artwork of local artists and charming rattan furnishings. Complimentary drinks (rum punch, frozen daiquiris, soft drinks, fruit juices, and bottled water) are served throughout the train ride while you enjoy colourful narration. Leaving Needsmust Station, the train is soon surrounded by fields of sugar cane. The railway skirts the volcanic slopes of Mt. Liamuiga, crosses numerous tall steel girder bridges, provides glimpses of black sand beaches and crumbling plantations, and offers up sweeping vistas of the nearby islands of Nevis, St. Barths, St. Maarten, Saba, and St. Eustatius. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Leaving the train, board your transport and continue your tour with the opportunity to explore a 300- year- old Fortress, perched on a 40-acre hill-top 750 feet above sea level. The first cannons were mounted on Brimstone Hill in 1690 as the English and French fought for control of the island. The next 100 years saw the intermittent construction of an amazing work of architectural and engineering genius. This magnificent structure is well-preserved and provides spectacular panoramic views of the coastline, countryside, and five neighbouring islands. The Brimstone Hill Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is a visitor centre, museum, gift shop, and well-informed and uniformed staff in attendance. Fairview Great House & Botanical Garden Step back in time and enjoy some of St. Kitts' history at this three hundred year old property where you can experience insights into ways in which inhabitants of different periods utilised it. Fairview Great House provides a true representation of a colonial St. Kitts Great House with the Great House rooms furnished in authentic colonial style. The Great House displays a historical information room where you can learn more about previous owners of the property, life on the island in colonial times, and the process undertaken to fully restore this historic gem. From the verandah and also the gardens you can see a panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea, South-East Peninsula and St. Kitts' sister island of Nevis. From the cobble-stone courtyard view the original kitchen with its volcanic stone and brick oven; the original bathing room with its large sun warmed volcanic stone bath; and stone bridge leading from the rear veranda of the Great House to the rear area of the tropical botanical garden. While in the courtyard don't forget to wander into the old stone cellar where you find a gift shop offering unique Fairview gifts and souvenirs for your shopping delight. The meticulously landscaped tropical botanical garden feature settings and plants of the 1700s - 1920s with a wide variety of fruit trees, palms, shrubs, and flowering plants.
